利兹大学是英国最受欢迎、同时也是入学竞争最激烈大学之一，根据英国高等院校招生办公室（UCAS）2010年的数据，利兹大学2010年有52,823名申请者，其中7,462人被录取，录取率为14.1%。2011年录取率为13.0%，而其中利兹大学商学院本科大一录取率仅为6.8%,仅有340-360位学生能有幸被录取。
2011年7月14日，英国高等教育基金委员会HEFCE公布的资料显示利兹大学被列入英国12所精英大学之一。2009至2010学年度，总计一共有50712名学生A-level考试取得至少AAB的成绩，其中，有26121(52%)名学生最后上了这12所大学。这12所大学分别是伯明翰大学、布里斯托大学、剑桥大学、杜伦大学、埃克塞特大学、利兹大学、曼彻斯特大学、诺丁汉大学、牛津大学、谢菲尔德大学、南安普顿大学、华威大学。英国每日电讯报Telegraph则称这些大学为英国的“常青藤大学”。
